Ornithological Research Group (ORG) was integrated by Avian Taxonomy and Faunal Research Division, Laboratory Taxonomy and Threatened & Endangered Species Conservation Divisions. The famous leading ornithologist, Academician Cheng Tso-Hsin has ever lead the group to finish over 10 key research projects supported by the State, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the State Forestry Department, and obtained the National Natural Science Award, the Significant Achievement Award of the National Conference of Science, the Special Award of the Progress of Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Special Award by the National Association of Publications, the Special Conservation Achievement Award of the National Wildlife Federation, USA, the lifelong Honorary Award of the China Wildlife Conservation Association and etc. Our field exploration sites are currently widespread almost throughout the whole country so that we have accumulated lots of field data and research references. We are currently conduct over 20 research projects from National Natural Science Foundation and Chinese Academy of Sciences, and have been cooperating with USA, England, German, Korea etc. The discovery of breeding colony of the Black-faced Spoonbill in China, breeding colony of the Relic Gull, and the wintering ground of the Siberian White Crane is considered as important ornithological discoveries of rare and endangered species during the 20’s century in China. We have discovered avian influenza viruses H5N1 infected migratory waterfowl populations in Qinghai Lake and infected the tree sparrows Henan province in 2005.
