Till now, with my lab members, I found and described more than 80 new species, 16 new record genera and 186 new record species in Hymenoptera in China. Since 2006, I have been working mainly on species diversity and systematics on Apoidea. One new record genus, 14 new species and 11 new record species were discovered. After cataloguing species, we raised the record of bees to 1342 ones. I have more than 130 research articles published, cited at 936 times.

We developed an automatic pipeline and novel method for bee species clustering and heuristic optimization of parameters basing on multiple loci. We developed the automatic taxonomic annotation of sequences in large public database of genes. With this approach, we can delimit labeled or unlabeled species, correct wrong taxonomic annotations and build up large, multiple loci datasets simultaneously. We proposed 4 index, simulated large datasets and did some real case studies on gene evolutionary models. Preferred selection was proposed in a paper published in BMC Evolutionary Biology in 2010. We set up bioinformatics approaches and evaluation criteria to compare all protein coding genes in MtGenome for species delimitation. We found all PNGs have higher accuracy above 90% and confirmed the efficiency of the popular DNA barcode for animal species.

We are studying on taxonomy, species delimitation, phylogenetic relationships and mechanisms of diversity patterns of Hymenoptera at different levels including species and above basing on single locus, multiple genes, mitochondrial genomes and large data banks.

Research Interests:
(1) Molecular taxonomy
  • Molecular taxonomy pipeline and methodology;
  • Species delineation with information from single locus or multiple loci;
  • The automatic approaches basing on public database.
(2) Molecular systematics
  • Screening multiple genes for insect phylogenetic reconstruction;
  • Integrate the laboratory data and the public database, data mining, build the super matrix, and reconstructing phylogenetic tree at the species level;
  • Data simulation and case study on common basic questions in molecular systematics.
(3) Hymenoptera Systematics
  • The research of systematics and functional morphology on Chalcidoidea (Eulophidae, Encyrtidae) and Apoidea;
  • Focusing on Hymenoptera, study the insect molecular taxonomy and molecular systematics via data mining and integration of the laboratory data and the public database.
  • Reconstruction of the phylogenetic tree to study the evolutionary relationship between parasitic Chalcidoidea and host insects, bees and host plants.
  • Develop the China-Australia Virtual Laboratory on Taxonomy to promote international collaboration among taxonomists to study Hymenoptera in China;
  • Via different sampling methods, especially the host baits, Malaise traps, artificial nest etc. to set up a long-term species sampling and monitoring network of Hymenoptera in different ecological zones in China.
